The Mayor of Londonderry Sinn Fein Kevin Campbell has condemned a series of paint bomb attacks on Apprentice Boys of Derry Memorial halls at the weekend.

Halls in the Meenan Square and Magazine Street areas were attacked on Saturday with paintbombs and graffiti.

Billy Moore, General Secretary of the Apprentice Boys Association said the attacks have been increasing recently and he is appealing to those in the area to report anyone they may suspect may be involved.

Mr Campbell yesterday added his voice to those condemning the attacks and said that those responsible do not have the support of the people of the city.

“No one in this city is supportive of this behaviour and I am really disappointed at this latest series of attacks,” he said.

“Just last month I attended an event outlining significant investment plans to build a new shared space at the Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall which will tell the city’s unique historic story.

“The city is working collectively to showcase our city to a global audience during 2013 and our City of Culture year and attacks of this nature are extremely unhelpful and not representative of public opinion. A lot of excellent work is being done on the ground between both communities to promote our shared history and our appreciation of everyone’s own identity and culture and it is extremely disappointing that a small minority of people are attempting to prevent that positive work from continuing.”

The Mayor said that anyone with information on the attacks should contact the relevant authorities.
