POLICE are investigating after a dead German Shepherd dog was found burned in the Springtown area of Londonderry.

Officers discovered the remains of the animal in an industrial estate around 5.40pm on Sunday.

SDLP councillor John Boyle urged anyone with information about the “brutal attack” to contact police.

“This animal suffered gruesome head injuries and was tortured and burned,” he claimed.

The condemnation comes as a 21-year-old man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of animal cruelty after a family pet was found with severe burns in Lisburn just over a week ago.

Cody, a collie dog owned by the Agnew family, was doused in a flammable liquid and set alight in the Maghaberry Road area on August 26. At first the family vet was not sure if the dog would survive the ordeal – but the beloved pet is making progress with the help of strong pain relief.
