An investigation has been launched after a fie broke out on the site for the planned new Foyle College in Londonderry.
Around 20 fire-fighters were needed to bring the fire - which broke out at 8pm on Sunday - under control at the former Clooney army base.
The site if the proposed new home for Foyle College and Ebrington Primary School.
It is understood a number of derelict portable buildings were damaged in last night’s fire.
SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey says he believes the fire was started deliberately.
“This wanton arson has to be condemned by all right-minded people. The site, which Foyle College has spent millions securing and which is of huge importance for this City and the education provision for our young people is close to a number of residential areas as well as the main arterial route through the Limavady Road where serious disruption has been caused tonight.
“My understanding at this point is that a number of older buildings have been set alight as well as an oil tank which has served only to feed the fire and raise concerns further in the area. I will be liaising with the Emergency Services overnight to ensure that residents in the area are safe and that damage and traffic disruption is minimised as best possible.
“Those responsible for this senseless attack have only served to defy the community and their actions can only strengthen the resolve of the people of the Waterside and indeed the whole City to ensure we provide world-class facilities for Foyle College and Ebrington Primary School in the near future. We will not be deterred.
“I urge anyone with information on this crime to contact the Police. “
