A MAJOR search and rescue operation was launched in Belfast Lough on Wednesday evening when two people were reported overboard from a Stena ferry approaching Belfast docks.
A woman has been rescued with an infant becoming the focus of the search operation.
The incident took place shortly after 6pm.
Several small craft joined the RNLI in sweeping the lough while the PSNI helicopter and one from Dublin coastguard hovered overhead.
The rescued woman is being treated in Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital. Her condition is described as “stable”.
