A NEW support group was launched yesterday with the aim of providing support to former members of the security forces.
Operation Service Support is a Christian organisation that acts as a sign-posting service in directing ex-servicemen and former RUC and PSNI officers to find help for issues such as alcohol and drug addiction, self-harm and marriage breakdown.
Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson attended the launch event yesterday at Westkirk Presbyterian Church, on the Shankill Road in Belfast.
“I was delighted to support the launch of Operation Service Support,” he said.
“There is no doubt that some invaluable work is being done in Northern Ireland to support our Armed Forces, including the Royal Irish aftercare, British Legion and the Benevolent fund among others. However there is no doubt that at times there are people who fall through the gaps. Operation Service Support is aimed at helping people who perhaps have difficulty in accessing these services.
“I commend Stephen [Wells] and everyone involved in the group. I think this is a valuable addition to the welfare and care that is available.”
Also in attendance were Belfast Deputy Lord Mayor and ex-servicewoman Ruth Patterson, Ulster Unionist Craigavon Deputy Mayor George Savage and PUP councillor Hugh Smyth.
Former Royal Irish soldier Stephen Wells is one of those involved with Operation Service Support. He said the idea arose from the help he had received from his church, Dundonald Elim.
He said Dundonald Elim undertake a lot of work with the military, including sending out parcels to Afghanistan.
“I saw a real need in the community for former soldiers who don’t engage with regimental charities for support,” he explained.
“We are a sign-posting service and will do what we can to direct those who come to us to services and professionals who will be best suited to meeting their needs.
“We are a voluntary organisation of several volunteers focused on making a difference in our society to the glory of God.”
Operation Service Support runs a 24-hour confidential helpline for those in need, telephone 07429 366876.
