POLICE are hunting three masked robbers who raided a house in Co Antrim and made off with a haul of jewellery in the family car.

One of the trio had a gun and another had a hunting knife. They tied up the terrified couple and spent some time searching the house room by room, methodically stealing items of jewellery.

The robbery occurred at around 9.35pm on Thursday night at Millbank Road East, in the Mallusk area of Newtownabbey, and the thieves drove off in the family’s silver Mercedes car. It was found a couple of miles away on the Roughfort Road, with the robbers having attempted to burn it.

The couple managed to free themselves and went to the home of a neighbour, who called the police.

The PSNI have issued descriptions of two of the thieves – one is described as being 5ft 9in, in his 20s, wearing dark clothing and green wellingtons, and the other around 20 years old, 5ft 7in and also wearing dark clothing.

South Antrim MLA and Newtownabbey councillor Paul Girvan said: “It was a frightening and traumatic experience for the couple and I appeal for anyone with information to contact the PSNI on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.

“This has sent shockwaves throughout the entire community and these criminals must be caught.”
