SDLP MLA Patsy McGlone has said he will not be deterred after receiving a death threat in the post.

He was sent a package containing a bullet and a sympathy card. The parcel – with his name and picture – was intercepted at a Royal Mail sorting office near Belfast.

The Mid-Ulster Assembly man blamed “faceless fascists”.

Several politicians have received similar threats in recent weeks amid the recent Union Flag protests by loyalists.

Mr McGlone said: “This is obviously not something that is a pleasant experience for me or my family.

“However, those who sent it will not put me off doing my job – that is, representing the people of Mid-Ulster.

“I would like to pay tribute to the staff at the Post Office and the PSNI for their professionalism and vigilance in dealing with this matter. I will leave this in the hands of the CID.

“I’m acutely aware that a number of other elected representatives, from my own party and others, have had similar threats and attacks on their homes and properties – they have come through this and I will come through this stronger. Democracy will come through this stronger.

“Whoever is responsible for this attack and others are faceless fascists. There is no other way to describe them.”

SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan said: “Those who are responsible for these vicious tactics – including the attack on the home of SDLP councillor Claire Hanna at the weekend – must stop their activities immediately.”

He said the attacks would not hinder the work of the SDLP – adding that the perpetrators were evidently “bankrupt of principle and barren of ideals”.

The Alliance Party’s Stewart Dickson also condemned the threat against Mr McGlone.

He said: “Any threat or attack against an elected representative is an attack on democracy. Every politician should be able to work on behalf of their constituents without the fear of violence or intimidation.

“We have seen a number of threats against politicians from several political parties, and attacks against their homes and offices, including my own. This violence must stop now.”
