An alleged dissident republican was remanded into custody on Saturday accused of collecting details relating to members of the security forces.

Appearing in the dock of Belfast Magistrates Court in jeans and a grey jumper, 43-year-old Anthony McDonnell spoke only to confirm that he understood the gathering against him.

McDonnell, from the Upper Springfield Road in west Belfast faces a charge of collecting information likely to be of use to terrorists, namely five vehicle registrations, on a date unknown between October 1 and December 12 last year.

He faces a further charge of possessing useful information on December 14 last year in that he allegedly had addresses and vehicle registration details of members of the security forces.

Detective Constable Graham told the court he believes he could connect him to the charges and under cross examination from solicitor Philip Breen, confirmed that since the searches before Christmas, numerous items including computer storage media were being examined as part of a “forensic strategy” in the “live” investigation.

The officer told the court and Mr Breen that by the time the case is next before the court on January 31 the PSNI would endeavour to have a timetable for the results of the examinations.

No bail application was lodged with the court so District Judge George Conner remanded McDonnell into custody to appear again on January 31.
