Ulster’s greatest receive New Year honours

A High Court judge, a consumer affairs expert and a 90-year-old woman are among the Northern Ireland New Years Honours recipients.

Mr Justice Tom Burgess who is due to retire, is awarded the CBE for services to the administration of justice. He is the former Recorder of Belfast and Derry and is president of the young solicitors association.

Eileen Evason, Emeritus Professor in social administration at the University of Ulster is also awarded the CBE for services to disadvantaged people.

She has played a key role in tackling social deprivation, domestic violence and women’s aid, is chairperson of the Northern Ireland joint standards committee and a regular commentator on consumer affairs.

A total of 71 people were awarded honours, nearly half of them coming from the voluntary and community services background, including Mrs Georgina Dickson, 90, from Ballynahinch, Co.Down for her charitable fundraising. She has been a member of the Presbyterian women’s association as well as being a congressional agent for Christian Aid, helping to raise awareness and funds for missionary work and local charities.

Mr Oswyn Paulin, head of government legal services at the Northern Ireland executive is awarded a CB, (Companions of the Order of the Bath) and Mike Smith, chief executive and managing director of the Titanic Quarter Ltd is one of nine people to receive the OBE.

It is in recognition of his services to the economic development and urban regeneration in Belfast.

John Brannigan, a former police officer, who became head of investigations at the Historical Enquiries Team which he helped establish to probe unsolved murders, is one of 39 people to get the MBE.

Dr John Crossle, who founded the Crossle car company in 1957 - it is now the longest established racing car manufacturer in the UK - BBC Radio Ulster pipe band music broadcaster Tom Millar, Francis Brady, managing director of the La Mon Hotel and Country Club near Belfast, and Charles Friel, a member of the Railway Preservation Society, are among the others.
