DAVID McNarry will hardly be missed at the Ulster Unionist Assembly group as he only attended about half of its meetings, an MLA said last night.
The MLA, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the veteran Strangford Assemblyman had little support within the UUP group and added: “I’d be surprised if many people notice that he’s gone.”
He claimed that Mr McNarry had “come late and left early” on several occasions.
“The cabinet papers released recently under the 30-year rule show that this is an individual with a long history of ill-dicipline,” the MLA told the News Letter.
“Back then he was working against Jim Molyneaux and more recently he called on Reg Empey to resign, live on TV, before the election result had even been announced.
“It’s good that the leader has taken decisive action because David McNarry has not been a team player here.”
The UUP MLA said he believed that the DUP would “play” Mr McNarry but he was unsure whether they would accept him as a member.
However, Mr McNarry said: “I think that I’ve had a fairly good record at group meetings, particularly when I’ve been involved in the activity being discussed.
“I wish people would make themselves known publicly, or, if they felt that way that they would come and see me.”
