A Mauritian paper which published images of the dead body of Michaela McAreavey is to be sued by the Tyrone woman’s family.
The 27-year-old daughter of Tyrone GAA manager Mickey Harte, was on honeymoon with her husband John at the luxury resort in January 2011 when she was strangled in her room.
Two men charged with her murder were acquitted by a jury on the island earlier this year.
Now it has emerged the Harte and McAreavey families will sue the Mauritius Sunday Times and the paper’s editor Imraan Hosany for damages reported to be in the region of £300,000.
Mr Hosany is on bail after being arrested and charged with outrage to public and religious morality by choosing to publish the photographs.
In a statement to the court in Mauritius the family said: “By printing, distributing and/or causing to be published these photos of the late Michaela Harte body as taken by the police photographer, defendants had committed a serious and unforgivable faute towards the plaintiffs.”
A new police investigation into the murder is currently underway.
