How to keep watching TV

TO get ready for the switchover, viewers should either get a new TV set which is capable of receiving digital signals, or get a set-top box to plug into your old TV.

These are called Freeview digital boxes, and allow viewers to get at least 15 free channels, including the five main ones which everybody can receive at the moment.

These can be obtained from as little as £15 or £20.

But anyone also wishing to pick up RTE may have to purchase a High-Definition (HD) Freeview box, which is more expensive, retailing at around £40-plus, or an HD TV.

Buyers are asked to make sure all these devices have a digital tick sticker on them.

Some elderly and infirm viewers may be able to get assistance under the BBC-run Help Scheme.

Under this scheme many over-75s, blind or disabled residents, as well as those in care, can apply to have an installer come to their home and set up the equipment – and under certain circumstances, it would be free.

The scheme is open for another month, and to learn more call 0800 4085900 or visit www.helpscheme.co.uk
