DRUM BEAT

LAST Saturday evening the Shankill welcomed 18 bands to its famous road and side streets, this time for the Young Conway Volunteers Flute.

An incredibly entertaining event saw the Regimental Band of the Ulster Volunteer Force steal the show for many. Their outstanding brand of melody yet military flute proved popular. Many remarked on Whitewell Defenders Flute, who were well up in numbers, while the blood and thunder of South Belfast Young Conquerors, Pride of the Shore and Lambeg Orange and Blue were each strong. Largest showing of the day came from the 40-man Gertrude Star from the east of the city, whilst from the fringes of north Belfast, Rathcoole Protestant Boys and Monkstown Young Citizen Volunteers Flute each added to proceedings.
